Runout checking, belt tensioning, bearing replacement, spindle repair, and speed RPM charts.
Plenty of people learn a drill press by watching a video, hitting pause, and copying what the hands do. That works, but a video moves fast and skips the why, so you end up mimicking steps without knowing which ones actually matter. This walks thro...
A drill press that is dialed in feels effortless: the table sits right, the speed suits the bit, and the depth stop lands every hole in the same place. A drill press that has never been adjusted feels like a fight. The good news is that every adju...
Before you order anything for your Delta 11-950, there is one question that decides whether the part fits: which Type is your machine? The **delta drill press 11-950 parts** world is split between Type 1 and Type 2 units, and while the two look ne...
Ellis drill presses are a different animal from the import machines most people search parts for. Ellis Manufacturing is a long-running American maker of industrial drill presses and metal-cutting equipment, and its machines, models like the 9000,...
Someone tells you their drill press "tops out at 3,100 RPM" and someone else brags about "20,000 RPM," and you start to wonder if you have been buying the wrong machine. You probably have not. Speed on a drill press is a tool you match to a job, n...
The belt position on a drill press is what sets your speed, and moving it to the right pulley steps is the single change that turns a bit-burning, wandering setup into clean, accurate holes. Knowing how to change the belt position on a drill press...
A drill press that is set up carelessly will still make holes, and that is the trap. It hides its own errors, drilling slightly off-square, wandering off the mark, or chewing the material, and you blame the bit or your technique when the real prob...
Stripped threads and snapped taps almost always come from one thing: a tap that started crooked. The drill press is the best tool most home shops own for fixing that, because it holds the tap perfectly square to the hole. The catch is that you do ...
A Delta press that whines, rumbles, or drills rough is usually telling you the spindle bearings are worn, and Delta built its presses well enough that a rebuild is worth doing. Delta drill press bearing replacement is a satisfying home-shop repair...
When a drill press belt cracks or starts slipping, the clock starts: the machine is down until you get the right replacement. The mistake that keeps it down is guessing the size, ordering wrong, and waiting again. Measuring the belt correctly the ...
The question I hear most often from Rockwell 17-600 owners isn't "where do I buy parts?" It's "will this part from a Delta actually fit my machine?" It's the right question to ask — and the answer is more nuanced than most forum posts admit.
The first time you need a replacement part or want to add an accessory, a drill press stops being one machine and becomes a stack of named pieces you suddenly have to know. Learning the parts is not trivia; it is how you order the right belt, desc...
The JET 13R is the kind of drill press that serious woodworkers and metalworkers actually want to own — not the machine you buy when you're getting started, but the machine you upgrade to when you've outgrown the budget benchtop presses. If you're...
If you have inherited or purchased a Delta Rockwell 15-017 drill press and are looking for the manual, you are in good company. The 15-017 is a 15-inch floor-standing drill press made during the Delta-Rockwell era, which spans roughly from the mid...
The V-belt on your Delta 11-990 started slipping mid-hole, you opened the belt cover expecting a quick part number lookup, and half the entries came back marked no longer available. That is the reality of Delta 11-990 drill press parts today: this...
A drill press guarantees a square hole because the machine controls the angle for you. Take that machine away and the whole job lands on your wrist, which is why freehand holes lean, wander, and blow out the back. The good news is that a square ho...
There's a particular kind of frustration that comes from following instructions to the letter — and still ending up with a belt that doesn't fit, a speed chart that doesn't match your pulleys, or a parts diagram that shows a depth-stop assembly yo...
A drill press is a simple machine, which is good news when something wears out, because almost every part that fails is replaceable and most are cheap. The trouble is not finding parts; it is knowing which ones fit. Buy a belt that is an inch too ...
You are standing at the bench with a Delta floor drill press that has run clean for years, and now the quill will not spring back, or the on/off toggle feels mushy, or the table clamp no longer bites. You go looking for Delta 16-1/2 drill press pa...
My neighbor inherited a drill press from his grandfather. The nameplate said "Rockwell." He went online looking for a manual and downloaded the first "17-600" PDF he found — only to discover the wiring diagram was completely different from his mac...
The **delta drill press 11-950 manual** is freely available as a PDF download, and you can have it in front of you in about two minutes. The harder question is whether the manual you pull actually matches the version of the machine sitting on your...
Walker Turner presses have a following for a reason. These are old American machines, built in an era of heavy castings and generous bearings, and a well kept one will outlast anything on the shelf today. The people who own them tend to love them....
If you own a Delta 11-990 and the spindle is slowing under load or you hear a squealing sound from under the head cover, the belt is almost certainly the culprit. The 11-990 is a 12-inch benchtop drill press running eight speeds between 620 and 3,...
Most cracked glass happens before the bit ever touches it. The pane was resting on a hard, uneven surface, or there was no water ready, or the piece could slide, and the crack that ruined it was set up by a rushed setup, not by the drilling itself...
The first time a DP15000 owner goes looking for a replacement chuck or a fresh drive belt, they usually hit the same wall: the machine still runs fine, but nobody at the counter recognizes the model number, and half the parts photos online look al...
JET has built drill presses for a long time, and the lineup spans benchtop, floor, and radial machines with names like JDP-17MF, JDP-17, and J-2530. That variety is why ordering the wrong part is easy: two JET presses can look similar and share no...
The Central Machinery 8-inch 5-speed bench drill press is one of the most visible entry-level machines at Harbor Freight. It shows up in garages, schools, and workshops across the country. Whether it belongs in yours depends on what you are actual...
Central Machinery 16-speed drill presses come in several configurations, benchtop and floor-standing, 13-inch and 17-inch swing, and multiple item numbers across Harbor Freight's production history. That variety is the first thing to resolve befor...
Here is a moment most new drill press owners share: they drill a beautiful hole in pine, then try the same setup in a piece of steel, and the bit screeches and turns blue. Nothing is broken. The speed was just wrong for the material, and changing ...
The JDP-20VS is a variable speed press, and that one detail changes everything about a belt swap. On a variable speed machine the belt runs between two adjustable sheaves rather than fixed steps, so the checks before you change it are different fr...
Ryobi's benchtop drill presses, the DP100, DP102L, DP120, and similar 10-inch models, were popular affordable machines, but they have largely left production in North America, so finding parts today takes a compatibility-first approach. The reassu...
A Delta drill press is one of those tools people keep for decades, which is exactly why the parts question comes up so often. The motor still runs, the cast iron is still flat, but the chuck slips or the depth stop stripped, and now you are starin...
A pulley that has spun on the same spindle for twenty years does not want to leave, and that is the whole challenge here: not the method, which is simple, but the corrosion and set screws quietly fighting you. Removing the pulley from a drill pres...
The single most useful thing you can tape inside your drill press cover is a metal speed chart, because metal is unforgiving about speed in a way wood is not. Run a bit too fast in steel and the edge overheats and dulls in seconds; run it right an...
The thickness of the steel changes everything, and almost no one tells beginners that. The speed that drills a clean hole in thin 1/8-inch flat bar will cook a bit halfway through a 1/2-inch block, because the thicker the steel, the longer the bit...
You fire up the drill press, feed a bit into hardwood, and the motor groans. The belt slips. The smell of burnt rubber fills the shop. You tighten the motor mount bolts another half turn, and the next time you run it, the bearings sound like grave...
If you own a Central Machinery 12-speed drill press, the manual is the document that tells you which belt, what spindle speeds, how to adjust the table, and how to identify each component by number. Central Machinery is Harbor Freight's house bran...
Most people run a drill press at one speed for years: whatever it happened to be set at the day they bought it. Then a big spade bit chatters, or a small twist bit in metal squeals and burns, and they realize the machine had gears all along. Learn...
You walk into a tool store or browse online and see a wall of drill presses. Ten-inch benchtops, twelve-inch variable speed models, floor-standing monsters with lasers and digital readouts. The specs blur together. You want a machine that drills s...
Here is the mistake that costs people a return shipment and a lost weekend: they find a chuck or a switch that looks exactly like the broken one, order it, and discover it does not seat, does not thread, or does not clear the casting. The part loo...
Clausing built its presses to last, so when one starts to whine or leave rough holes, worn spindle bearings are usually the cause and a rebuild is well worth doing. Clausing drill press bearing replacement is a rewarding repair, but the checks you...
Some drill presses simply will not go slow enough. You move the belt to the lowest setting, and the chart still reads seven or eight hundred RPM, which is fine for wood but far too fast for a large hole saw or a big bit in steel. That gap between ...
The **Powermatic PM2800B** is the current-generation flagship in the Powermatic drill press lineup — the latest evolution of the 2800 series with refinements to the variable speed system, improved depth readout, and updated table mechanics. If you...
You chuck up a bit, spin the machine, and the tip draws a little circle in the air instead of holding one point. Your gut says the spindle is bent. Before you take a mallet to a hardened steel shaft, read this, because in most shops the real probl...
The 10-inch, 12-speed benchtop drill press is the sweet spot a lot of home shops land on, and for good reason. The 10-inch swing covers most workpieces you will center a hole in, and twelve speeds give you enough range to run tiny bits in wood and...
A WEN 4208 sits on my second bench, and I reach for it more than I expected when I bought it. I thought it would be a starter machine I would eventually replace. Three years later it still handles small drilling, shelf pin layouts, and occasional ...
Ryobi drill presses have been quiet workhorses in home shops for years, and if you own one, sooner or later you will need a part: a belt, a chuck, a switch, a table lock. Here is the reality that trips people up. Ryobi has sold several drill press...
The Powermatic 2800 is a current-production machine from an active manufacturer with full parts support. That makes servicing it straightforward compared to vintage equipment — but there are still things worth knowing before you pick up the phone ...
The quill on your press has started to feel sticky, or it drops with a jerk instead of gliding, and the return is lazy. The instinct is to hose it down with oil. Do not. Learning how to lubricate a drill press spindle the right way is as much abou...
Plenty of woodworkers own a mortising attachment that has cut exactly one ragged mortise before going back in the drawer. The tool got blamed, but the method was usually the problem. Cutting clean mortises on a drill press is a learnable routine, ...
A drill press wants to drill straight down. That is its whole nature. So when a project calls for a hole at forty five degrees, a stopped chair leg, an angled dowel joint, a slanted mounting hole, you have to change the geometry between the bit an...
The box shows up heavier than you expected, a slab of cast iron in pieces, and now you are on the garage floor with an Allen wrench trying to figure out which of the five belt grooves gives you the right speed for a Forstner bit. If you own or are...
Search this phrase and you will find plenty of videos of people cutting slots on a drill press. What you will not always hear is the part where the spindle flexes, the end mill grabs, and the workpiece jumps. Milling on a drill press sits in an aw...
Somewhere online, someone is milling an aluminum bracket on a drill press and it looks like it works. What the video does not show is the end mill slowly pulling out of the drill chuck, the spindle bearings taking a beating they were never designe...
The question comes up in every home shop eventually. You need to cut a slot, square a corner, or clean up an edge, and the only machine on hand is a drill press. Can it do the job of a mill? The step-by-step answer below will get you through one l...
Drill press listings throw a wall of numbers at you, swing, speeds, spindle travel, chuck capacity, motor rating, and it is easy to fixate on whichever one sounds biggest. That is how people end up with a press that has impressive specs and still ...
Most people can name the chuck and the table on a drill press and stop there. But when something needs adjusting, replacing, or buying, that vocabulary runs out fast, and a repair or a purchase turns into pointing at a photo and hoping. Knowing th...
The Ryobi DP102L is one of those tools people are genuinely fond of despite its quirks. It is a compact 10-inch benchtop press that lived on the shelf at Home Depot for years, and plenty are still running in garages long after the model left the c...
Almost every drill press owner faces this one eventually. The belt glazes, cracks, or stretches, and the press starts slipping under load, squealing on startup, or buzzing with a vibration that was not there last year. A drill press belt replaceme...
There is a version of this idea that is genuinely useful and a version that will send a chunk of wood across your shop. The difference comes down to whether you use the drill press to spin work for hand shaping, which it does well, or try to make ...
Milling aluminum on a drill press is a stretch. Milling steel on one is a different order of trouble, because steel adds hardness and heat to a machine that was already fighting the wrong kind of load. People try it to save the cost of a mill, and...
A drill press feels tame. It stands still, it drills a hole, it stops. That calm is exactly why people get hurt on it, because the two things that cause the worst injuries, a workpiece that spins loose and loose clothing or hair caught in the chuc...
If you already own a drill press and you keep staring at those square mortises in furniture plans wondering how you are supposed to make them, I have good news and a little bad news. The good news is that yes, you can cut real mortises on a drill ...
If you've ever spent an afternoon hunting down a replacement part for a Shop Fox drill press, you know the frustration. The machine itself is solid — often built to last decades — but the moment a chuck key goes missing or a table support bracket ...
Your chuck runs true but you need a different taper, or the arbor itself is nicked and the chuck wobbles no matter how clean you get it. Either way, learning how to change the arbor on a drill press is worth the fifteen minutes, and the job is sim...
Getting the Central Machinery 8-inch 5-speed bench drill press running correctly takes about an hour if you work methodically. Do it right and the machine will be safe, square, and ready to use. Rush the setup, and you will discover the problems m...
The Delta Rockwell 15-655 is not a standard upright drill press. It is a 15-inch radial drill press, which means the drill head is mounted on an arm that can swing outward and be positioned laterally along the arm's length. If you own one and are ...
Powermatic drill presses are built to last, which is exactly why so many owners eventually go looking for parts. A machine that runs for decades will need a belt, a chuck, or a spindle component at some point, and Powermatic's long history means t...
The first time I went hunting for a V-belt for my Powermatic 1150, I wasted two hours chasing part numbers on a machine whose serial tag had gone illegible from decades of shop dust. I ordered a belt. It was wrong. I ordered another. Still wrong. ...
Sometimes you do not need a hundred holes or a whole guide to workshop theory. You need one straight hole, right now, and there is no drill press in sight. Maybe you are hanging a gate, mounting a bracket, or fixing something at a friend's place w...
There is a particular pleasure in a belt-driven drill press that no gear-head machine quite matches. You move a V-belt from one pulley step to another, feel the machine settle into a new speed, and understand exactly how the power gets from the mo...
The JET JDP-20MF is a serious machine. At 20 inches of swing, it handles workpieces that a 17-inch press can't center properly, and the heavier spindle and larger motor mean you can actually push it. But all of that capability comes with a catch: ...
It is the most common shortcut in the hobby-shop world, and one of the most misunderstood. You have a drill press, you need to cut a slot or flatten an edge, and a mill feels out of reach. Can you convert the one into the other? The truthful answe...
It is one of the most tempting ideas in a home shop: you already own a drill press, a milling machine is expensive, and both spin a cutter, so why not turn one into the other? The honest answer is that you can do light milling on a drill press wit...
Here's the thing nobody warns you about when you order parts for the Porter-Cable PCXB620DP: the model number alone isn't enough. You'll search "PCXB620DP V-belt," add it to your cart, and feel good about yourself. Then the belt arrives and it's w...
The 5-speed drill press is probably the most common type of benchtop press in American home shops, and it is also the most misunderstood. Buyers see the five-speed spec and assume more speeds means more versatility, which is partly true. But the r...
Bearings give you plenty of warning before they fail, if you know the sound. A press that used to spin up silky smooth develops a low rumble, then a whine that rises with speed, and eventually a roughness you can feel in the feed handle. Ignore it...
The press was fine yesterday. Today you push the green button and nothing happens, or it starts and then dies the moment you let go. Before you order anything, a Boky 16mm drill press start switch replacement is worth slowing down on, because the ...
The stiff, flat-brimmed campaign hat a drill sergeant wears only looks sharp because it is kept shaped, and the tool that keeps it that way is a hat press: a fixture that holds the crown and brim in their correct form while the felt is steamed and...
Let me be straight before the steps: a drill press is not a milling machine, and asking it to mill aluminum is asking a tool built for downward thrust to take side loads it was never designed for. That said, with light cuts, a rigid setup, and rea...
Owning a Powermatic 1200 is owning a piece of American manufacturing history. These machines were built to last generations — and the fact that you need parts means yours is still working, which is exactly the point. Here's how to source what you ...
There is a difference between drilling a hole on a drill press and truly operating one. Anyone can pull the lever and make the bit go down. Operating the machine means knowing what every control does, adjusting the press for the job in front of yo...
Most people looking for a steel speed chart want a single number to dial in and forget. The number matters, but by itself it will not save a bit or produce a clean hole. Steel responds to the whole setup: the speed, yes, but also the feed pressure...
Aluminum looks like the easy metal, and then a bit grabs, climbs the flutes, and welds a gummy ribbon of metal to itself halfway through the hole. Anyone who has drilled aluminum on a drill press knows that squeal. The fix is rarely a better machi...
If you've inherited a Delta floor drill press and you're pretty sure it's a 17-600, the first thing worth doing is making sure you're right. The 17-600 and its successor, the 17-900, look similar enough to create real confusion — and the two machi...
The SKIL 3320 is a 10-inch, 5-speed benchtop drill press that was widely sold through home centers and has since been discontinued in North America. The belt is the most common maintenance item on any step-pulley drill press, and on the 3320 it is...
Your belt let go mid-hole, or it is cracked and squealing, and the obvious move is to search "10 drill press replacement v belt," add the first result to the cart, and get back to work. That is exactly how a lot of people end up with a belt that i...
The WEN 5-speed drill press (most often the 8-inch 4208) is the machine that gets a lot of people their first real drill press. It is compact, simple, and does exactly what a small bench press should. But "5-speed" tells you something important ab...
"Measure the drill press" sounds like one job, but people mean very different things by it: the swing that names the machine's size, the chuck capacity, the arbor taper for a replacement chuck, the belt length, the vise jaws, the runout, or the sp...
You chuck a straight bit, flick the switch, and the tip draws a little circle in the air instead of a clean point. Your holes come out fat, slightly oval, or off your layout mark. That wobble has a name: runout. Before you blame the machine and st...
Many Delta drill presses top out their low end around 250 to 300 revolutions per minute, which is fine for wood and small bits but still too fast for a large hole saw in steel. So owners start hunting for a Delta drill press slow speed attachment,...
A drill press is built to drill straight down, so the first time you need a hole at forty-five degrees, the machine seems to be working against you. It is not. There are two clean ways to tilt the work relative to the bit, and once you know them, ...
Central Machinery 12-speed drill presses look similar across Harbor Freight's years of production, and that similarity is exactly where owners get into trouble when ordering parts: two machines that look identical on the bench can have different i...
A cracked or missing table crank handle on a King 5 speed press makes raising and lowering the table a two hand wrestle, and it is one of the more satisfying quick fixes on the machine. The one thing that trips people up is the fit: the handle mou...
If you have only ever used a handheld drill, a drill press chuck feels familiar and slightly different at the same time. It grips harder, sits at an awkward angle to reach, and punishes a sloppy install with a bit that wanders or slips. Putting a ...
The most common reason a hole comes out burnt, or a big bit screams and grabs, or a metal bit goes dull in one job, is simple: the press was spinning too fast. New owners often leave the speed wherever it was and push on, not realizing that speed ...
A drill press turns woodworking projects from fiddly to precise, but only if the speed and the setup match the job in front of you. Boring shelf-pin rows, hinge cups, and dowel joints each want a different speed and a different kind of support, an...
Walk down the drill press aisle and the spec that jumps out is the speed count: 5-speed, 12-speed, 16-speed. More is better, right? Not automatically. A 16-speed drill press promises fine control over spindle RPM, which genuinely matters, but the ...
A wood plug is the difference between a screw hole that shouts and one you can barely find. Cut a plug from the same board, glue it over the counterbored screw, sand it flush, and the grain almost disappears. The clean way to make plugs is on a dr...
There's a particular frustration that comes with owning a machine as capable as the JET JDP-17MF and not being able to find the exact manual that matches yours. You pull up a PDF, flip to the belt-speed chart, and something's off — the pulley conf...
The idea is tempting. You already own a drill press, it spins a cutter and moves it up and down, and a milling machine seems like the same thing with a moving table. So why not add a cross-slide vise, chuck an end mill, and start cutting slots? Be...
The hardest part of restoring an antique drill press is almost never the wrenching. It is finding the one part you need and knowing, before you spend the money, that it will actually fit. Antique parts do not come with tidy catalog numbers. They c...
The Central Machinery 12-speed drill press is one of Harbor Freight's most searched machines, and the reason is simple: it is a 10-inch benchtop press that comes in at a price that makes a first drill press easy to justify. But buyers often arrive...
Most people learn to change a drill press bit by copying whoever showed them first, which is why so many chucks end up with the bit seated crooked or barely gripped. It is a two-minute job that goes wrong in small ways: a bit that slips under load...
Here is a small habit that separates people who get clean holes from people who burn bits: they change the drill press speed to match the job, every time, without a second thought. Most beginners never touch the speed because nobody showed them ho...
You chuck a straight bit, spin it by hand, and the tip draws a little circle in the air instead of staying put. That wobble is runout, and it is the reason your holes come out slightly oversized, a touch ragged, or not quite where the mark was. Th...
Chuck a straight bit into a drill press, spin it slowly by hand, and watch the tip. If it traces a clean point, you are in good shape. If the tip draws a tiny circle, you are looking at runout, and you have just found the reason your holes come ou...
The part looks right in the photo. It is the correct color, roughly the right shape, and the seller swears it came off the same kind of machine. You buy it, it arrives, and it does not fit, because the bore is an eighth of an inch too big or the t...
The Dremel 212 Drill Press is one of those tools that seems simple until you actually try to use it for precise work — and then suddenly the setup details matter a lot. This guide covers how to set up the 212 correctly, what it's actually capable ...
The Central Machinery 16-speed drill press manual is one of the most-searched documents by Harbor Freight drill press owners, and with good reason: it contains the parts diagram, the speed chart, the belt-change procedure, and the safety requireme...
You are standing over your Central Machinery 5-speed drill press with a stretched, glazed belt in one hand and a parts diagram you half trust in the other. The chuck still spins, but the belt slips under any real load, and you want the right centr...
If you already own a drill press, you are closer to a working spindle sander than you think. Slide the right drum into the chuck, tighten it down, and that vertical machine you use for boring holes will happily smooth curves, clean up bandsaw mark...
If you've ever ordered a replacement part for a Black Bull drill press and watched it arrive in a box that was clearly the wrong size, you know the frustration. The swing looks right on the listing, the price is reasonable, and then the chuck arbo...
Boring is not drilling. Drilling makes a hole roughly the size of the bit; boring opens an existing hole to a precise size with a fine, adjustable cut. People reach for a drill press to bore a cylinder because they already own one, and with a bori...
You grab the chuck and wiggle it, and there is a click and a shift that should not be there. Or your holes come out slightly oval and the bit chatters. That slop is spindle play, and learning how to fix drill press spindle play starts with figurin...
The SKIL 3320 has a small cult following among hobbyists who bought one on a whim and were pleasantly surprised. It is a compact 10-inch benchtop press with a laser guide, and it did the job for years of light drilling. Then the manual goes missin...
A square hole sounds like a riddle. A round bit cannot cut corners, so how does anyone bore a clean square mortise? The answer is a clever piece of tooling that has been around for over a century: a hollow chisel with a drill bit spinning inside i...
A drill press switch looks simple, but the wiring behind it is the one place on the machine where a mistake can hurt you or ruin a motor. Whether you are replacing a failed switch, chasing a machine that will not start, or rewiring an old Craftsma...
A quill that will not spring back, or a feed handle that kicks when you release it, points at the return spring, and the temptation is to dive straight into the cap. The checks first are what separate a clean repair from a spring that jumps loose ...
There is a particular kind of frustration that comes with owning a solid, heavy 15-inch floor press that the manufacturer no longer stocks. The DP15501 still bores clean holes, the cast iron still shrugs off vibration, and then one day the belt cr...
A drill press looks heavy and stable sitting on the bench, so the temptation to skip bolting it down is strong. Then one day you drill a big bit into steel, the bit grabs, and the whole machine tries to twist or the tall column rocks. That is the ...
Most holes in most projects are drilled without a drill press, so the honest starting point is that you do not need one for the majority of jobs. What you need is a way to keep a handheld drill straight, because the whole reason people reach for a...
The belt snaps, or the quill spring lets go with a bang, or the chuck finally wobbles past the point of drilling a straight hole, and you go looking for Central Machinery drill press parts. Then the trouble starts. Central Machinery is Harbor Frei...

The **Ellis 9400** sits above the Ellis 9000 in the Ellis drill press lineup — a heavier, more capable machine designed for demanding production environments. If you're servicing one or trying to understand its capabilities before buying used, thi...
Most people who say steel is impossible to drill are really saying their bit is dull, their speed is too high, or both. Steel does not need a drill press to drill through cleanly, but it is far less forgiving of a handheld drill than wood or alumi...
Drilling metal on a press is where a lot of people discover that the machine is easy and the technique is everything. The press holds the bit square, but it will happily drive a dull bit at the wrong speed straight into a part that then spins loos...
There is a particular frustration to drilling metal by hand: you line the bit up carefully, squeeze the trigger, and the hole comes out leaning, oversize, or wandering off the mark because the bit skated before it bit. On wood you can often fudge ...
Sooner or later, restoring an older Delta means chasing a specific part number, and 1346008 is one that sends owners searching. The number is stamped or listed in an old parts diagram, the press still runs, and you need the matching component to f...
Most torn-up holes in metal come from the same mistake: the drill press is spinning too fast. It feels productive to run a bit at full tilt, but in steel that heat has nowhere to go except into the cutting edge, and a sharp bit turns blue and dull...
Pocket holes are one of the fastest ways to join wood: an angled hole that lets a screw drive from an inconspicuous spot into the mating piece. Most people make them with a dedicated jig, but a drill press can produce clean, consistent pocket hole...
The idea is seductive: a drill press already spins a workpiece, so surely with the right vise and a tool holder it can turn metal like a lathe. Videos make it look plausible. Then you actually try to face the end of a steel rod, feel the whole hea...
The Central Machinery T-583 is one of the better-known Harbor Freight drill presses, a 16-speed benchtop machine that found its way into a lot of small shops. If you own one, you already know its appeal: it drills accurately, handles most benchtop...
You flip the switch, the motor hums the way it always has, and the chuck barely turns. Or there's a slap-slap-slap coming from under the belt cover and a faint smell of hot rubber. That is almost always a belt that has stretched, glazed, or cracke...
The first time you use a sanding drum in a drill press, something clicks. Suddenly those bandsaw curves, jigsaw cutouts, and router-table sweeps that always needed an hour of rasping and file work sand smooth in minutes. A drill press running a sa...
A benchtop drill press is a simple machine right up until a part quits. A switch stops working, a belt cracks, the quill spring loses tension and the chuck no longer springs back, and the whole thing sits idle. The good news is that most of what b...
I drilled shelf-pin holes in a cabinet side once without a fence, trusting my layout lines and a steady hand. Twenty holes later, the row wandered like a country road, and every crooked hole was on display inside that cabinet. That was the day I s...
The most useful thing taped to my drill press is not a fancy jig. It is a small card of numbers. Once the correct RPM for a given metal and bit size is a two-second glance instead of a guess, the holes come out round and the bits stop dying. A dri...
Wood hides its speed mistakes for exactly one second, then shows them all at once: a puff of smoke around a Forstner bit, a scorched ring on maple, a fuzzy blown-out exit. Almost every one of those traces back to spindle speed. Drill press RPM for...
Drilling metal on a drill press is not hard, but it is easy to do badly, and metal punishes the mistakes with dull bits, torn holes, and spinning workpieces. The good news is that clean metal holes come from a short, repeatable routine: set a slow...
If you own a Delta 17-950L and you've tried to source a replacement part, you've probably run into the same problem: most search results point you to the 17-900. The listings look similar. The machines look similar. And sometimes the parts are the...
A Delta press that will not start, or that cuts out partway through a cut, sends a lot of owners looking for a motor problem when the real culprit is the switch. Switches are among the most replaceable parts on any Delta, from the older toggle and...
Every so often someone clears out a relative's shed and finds a curious cast-metal stand with a portable drill clamped into it, wearing a faded Black & Decker badge and the number GD80. It looks like a drill press, works like a drill press, and ye...
Inside the belt cover of almost every drill press is a small printed chart that most people glance at once and never really understand. It is one of the most useful things on the machine. Learn to read it and you will always know which pulley step...
Let's get one thing straight before we go any further: a drill press is not a milling machine. Every year, woodworkers and hobby machinists damage spindle bearings, ruin workpieces, and occasionally fling parts across the shop by ignoring this fun...
Comprehensive guide, reviews, and specifications for drill press equipment.
Run a bit too fast and it overheats, burns the wood, and goes dull; run it too slow and it chatters and wanders. The right speed lives in a fairly narrow band that changes with the material and the bit diameter, and no one memorizes all of it. Tha...
Wood forgives a lot, which is why most people never think about drill press speed until a big Forstner bit scorches a nice board or packs its flutes with smoking chips. A wood speed chart prevents that: it tells you how fast to run each bit so it ...
The Kobalt 6.5-amp 5-speed benchtop drill press sits in a crowded corner of the market: the accessible benchtop machines that big retailers sell to home shops and DIY users. What makes the Kobalt worth a look is its motor rating. At 6.5 amps, it c...
Not everyone has room for a drill press, and plenty of good work happens without one. The problem is that a handheld drill wants to wander: the bit walks off the mark, tips a few degrees, and the hole that was supposed to be square comes out leani...
Deciding to make your own drill press is appealing, you get the straight-hole capability of a drill press from a handheld drill and some shop-built structure. But it is a project that rewards thinking before building, because the difference betwee...
Delta built drill presses for decades, revised them along the way, and sold them under Delta, Delta/Rockwell, and Rockwell badges, which means a single model can exist in several slightly different versions. That is why ordering vintage Delta part...
Rockwell drill presses were built in an era when a machine was meant to be repaired, not replaced, which is good news when the belt finally cracks. The belt is one of the few wear parts on these old workhorses, and changing it is a job the origina...
When the quill on your Grizzly press stops springing back after a hole, the return spring has either lost tension or broken, and the fix is well within reach at home. Replacing the quill spring on a Grizzly drill press is a satisfying repair, but ...
You bought a used Delta 17-900. Or you inherited one from a shop that closed. Either way, it came without a manual — or with one that doesn't quite match what you're looking at. The speed chart is different. The belt routing diagram shows a differ...
Ordering a drill press part sounds simple until you are staring at three similar-looking belts, two chucks with different tapers, and a parts diagram that assumes you already know your model number. Get it wrong and you wait a week for a part that...
Belt tension is the quiet setting that decides whether your drill press delivers full power or slips, squeals, and wears out bearings early. Too loose and the belt slips under load; too tight and it drags on the motor and spindle bearings. Learnin...
The first time I could not figure out why my Ryobi drill press was leaving burn marks on oak, I was running too fast. The bit looked fine. The drill press looked fine. I had just never moved the belt, and the factory setting suited plywood, not ha...
I've looked at a lot of drill presses in the sub-$3,000 range, and most of them make you pick between price and rigidity. The Baileigh DP-1000E sidesteps that compromise better than you'd expect from a belt-driven floor machine at this weight clas...
The drill press is the tool woodworkers buy last and use more than they expected. It bores the shelf-pin rows, the hinge cups, the dowel joints, and the angled holes that a hand drill can only approximate, and the difference between a press that m...
If you search "bench drill press" and sort by lowest available, the Central Machinery 60238 will land near the top of the results. Harbor Freight sells it under their house brand, and the item number 60238 has appeared on shelves and online for ye...
The Chicago DP-515 is a 5-speed benchtop drill press sold under the Chicago Power Tools and Chicago Electric brands, primarily through Harbor Freight and similar discount-tool retailers. It is a conventional belt-driven benchtop press with a step-...
A cribbage board is mostly one thing: rows of tiny, evenly spaced holes drilled to a consistent depth. That is exactly the kind of repetitive precision a drill press makes easy, which is why so many people assume you need one. You do not. With a s...
A slipping belt is a quiet thief. The Ryobi still runs, still sounds mostly right, but bits bog down in hardwood, speeds drift, and there is a faint squeal on startup that you have learned to ignore. That is a belt telling you it is glazed, stretc...
A pulley that will not come off is the wall most people hit mid-repair, usually while chasing a bearing or a seized spindle, and reaching for a dedicated puller is not always an option. Removing a drill press pulley without a puller is possible, a...
A drill press is prized for one thing above all: it drills straight, square holes and holds the work steady while it does. When you make your own, usually a handheld drill in a shop-built stand, that is exactly the capability you are trying to rep...
If you own a Delta 70-200 drill press, you already know this machine is not your typical benchtop unit. The 70-200 is a full 20-inch floor drill press, and finding **delta 70-200 drill press parts** requires a different approach than hunting for p...
Sourcing **parts for the Rockwell Delta drill press 17-600** is the definitive vintage machine challenge. The 17-600 is a well-built floor-standing press from the Delta-Rockwell era, capable of decades more service. The catch is that Delta-Rockwel...
A bent or badly rusted column turns an otherwise good Central Machinery 10 inch 12 speed press into a machine that will not hold alignment, and replacing the column is the fix that brings it back. It sounds like a big job, but on these presses the...
A lathe spins the work and brings a tool to it. A drill press spins a tool and pushes it down. They look related, and every so often someone with only a drill press wonders whether they can bridge the gap for a small turning job. The honest answer...
Finding parts for the Ellis 9000 drill press is fundamentally different from hunting for parts for a discontinued consumer brand. **Ellis Manufacturing is still in business.** That changes everything.
The moment you need to replace a worn part or figure out how a mechanism goes back together, you go looking for a parts diagram, an exploded view that names every piece and shows how they fit. And that is where a lot of repairs stall, because the ...
There's a moment when you walk into a shop and see a Powermatic drill press in the corner, and you know immediately that whoever owns this shop takes their work seriously. The Powermatic 1150 is that kind of machine — built for the high end of the...
The K31 is one of the most common little V-belts in the benchtop world, which is exactly why people get it wrong: they see "K31" on a dozen listings and assume any of them will drop in. A drill press belt replacement in K 31 size is easy to fit, b...
An electrical fault feels more intimidating than a mechanical one, but a drill press switch is one of the friendliest repairs on the machine. The symptoms are clear: the press will not start, or it cuts out mid cut, or the switch feels mushy and u...
When people say they want to remove the spindle from a JT33 drill press, they usually mean a press whose chuck mounts on a JT33 taper, and what they actually need to pull apart depends on the job: getting the chuck off the arbor, dropping the whol...
The first square hole most people cut on a drill press comes out looking chewed, not clean. The corners are torn, one wall bows, and the chisel screams on the way down. Then they assume the tool is junk and give up. It usually is not the tool. It ...
Not everyone has a drill press, and plenty of good work gets done without one. The trouble starts when a handheld drill has to stand in for a fixed machine and the hole comes out leaning, oversized, or blown out the back. A leaning hole in a shelf...
Facing metal, taking a rough or uneven surface and cutting it flat, is one of those jobs people assume a drill press can do because it already spins a cutter over a clamped part. It can, barely, and the way it usually goes wrong is dramatic: a fly...
WEN is one of the easiest drill press brands to get parts for, and that is not an accident. WEN is a current manufacturer that sells its own replacement parts and accessories directly, keeps manuals online, and organizes everything by model number...
Among serious machinists and woodworkers, the Powermatic 1200 carries a reputation that borders on reverence. It's a floor-standing drill press from Powermatic's mid-century American manufacturing era — built heavier and more precisely than anythi...
The WEN 4208 is the press that got a whole generation of hobbyists into drilling straight holes. It is small, honest, and cheap enough to buy on impulse, and it shows up on more garage benches than almost any other 8-inch machine. That popularity ...
The Clarke BT1000A is one of those honest little benchtop presses that keeps working long after its parts catalog has gone quiet. So when the belt finally glazes over and starts slipping, the frustrating part is not the repair, it is finding the b...
The bit is smoking, the hole edges are scorched, and you are pretty sure the wood is about to catch a tan. That is a Ryobi drill press running the wrong speed for the job, and the fix is not a knob, it is the belt. Learning how to adjust the belt ...
Porter Cable built a reputation on job-site tools — circular saws, sanders, routers — but their drill press lineup is a different story. The machines are real, the parts ecosystem is thinner than you'd expect for a name-brand tool, and the model h...
Grainger sells a lot of industrial tools under house brands, and Dayton is one of the oldest and most trusted of them. If your Dayton drill press needs a part, the good news is that Grainger is still very much in the parts business. The challenge ...
The Ellis 9000 is not a Home Depot drill press. If you've found yourself looking for an Ellis 9000 manual, you're probably dealing with a piece of industrial or trade-quality equipment that has been running in a professional shop, a school, or an ...
When a Delta 11-950 starts slipping under load, squealing on startup, or bogging down in a cut, the belt is almost always the reason, and a change is one of the simpler repairs on the machine. The trick is that a belt change is also your chance to...
There is a reason old cast-iron belt-driven drill presses still turn up in shops and estate sales decades after they were built: they were made from thick castings, simple mechanisms, and parts you can still service by hand. A metal belt-driven dr...
The stack of stepped pulleys inside a drill press looks complicated, but it is really just a set of gears you shift by moving a belt. The pulley speed chart is the map that tells you which shift gives which speed. Once you can read it, choosing th...
Ask two people what causes drill press runout and you will often get two answers: one blames the machine, the other blames the bit. They are both partly right, and that is the useful insight. Runout is never one thing. It is a stack of small error...
A proper drill press earns its keep by drilling perfectly straight, square holes and by holding the work steady while it does. A DIY drill press, usually built around a handheld drill held in a shop-made stand, can approach that, but only if you a...
Someone inherits a workshop, finds a compact 10-inch Ryobi bolted to the bench, and goes looking for the manual, only to discover the internet is full of manuals for every Ryobi drill press except the one in front of them. If you need a Ryobi DP10...
A 16-speed drill press is a workhorse, but when a belt frays or the chuck starts slipping, the search for parts can turn frustrating fast. Many 16-speed machines are sold under store or import brands, Black Bull, K&F, Northern Industrial, Guardian...
Dayton is Grainger's house brand, which makes buying parts for a Dayton drill press different from almost any other name. There is no "Dayton factory" in the usual sense; Dayton machines are sourced and sold through Grainger, and that is also wher...
The Powermatic 2800 represents Powermatic's current flagship drill press — a variable-speed floor-standing machine that brings together everything the brand has learned across decades of manufacturing. If you've invested in a 2800 and want to get ...
You set up a careful hole, drill it, and the far side comes out at a slight angle, or a dowel seated in it leans. The usual culprit is not your technique but the table: it is not square to the bit. A drill press table that sits even a degree off w...
Aluminum sheet looks like the easiest thing in the world to drill, right up until the bit grabs, the sheet spins into a spinning aluminum saw blade, and you are left with an oval hole and a bent piece. Learning how to drill holes in aluminum sheet...
An unmounted drill press is a hazard waiting to happen. The machine is top-heavy, drilling forces try to twist it, and a bit that grabs can spin an unsecured press or the workpiece with it. "Mounting" covers a few different situations, though, bol...
Drilling a hole by hand sounds like a step backward until you have done it well on a vintage manual drill press. There is a rhythm to it, crank the flywheel up to speed, engage the feed, and watch a curl of steel come off the bit while your arm do...
Pen turning has one moment that scares people off: drilling the blank. You have a small, square-ish piece of wood or acrylic, you need a hole straight down its center for the brass tube, and the standard advice assumes you own a drill press. If yo...
The first hole most people drill on a bench drill press wanders. You line up the bit, pull the feed handle, and the tip skates a little before it bites, leaving a hole sitting a hair off the mark. That wander is not bad luck. It is almost always t...
