Powermatic 2800 Drill Press Parts: What You Need to Know for Service

All Posts setup maintenance Noah Carter

The Powermatic 2800 is a current-production machine from an active manufacturer with full parts support. That makes servicing it straightforward compared to vintage equipment — but there are still things worth knowing before you pick up the phone or place an order.

Parts Support: Active and Current

  1. powermatic.com — parts lookup by model number
  2. JPW Customer Service — 1-800-274-6848
  3. eReplacementParts.com — often the fastest option for common parts
  4. Authorized Powermatic dealers — a local dealer can sometimes expedite service parts

The 2800 is a premium machine and Powermatic backs it with a warranty. Register your machine if you haven’t already.

Critical Specs

SpecValue
Spindle taperMT3
Chuck interfaceJT33
Motor1-3/4 HP, 115V/230V single phase
Table20” × 20” cast iron

Know these before calling Powermatic for parts — have your serial number ready.

Variable Speed Drive System: Service Notes

The 2800’s variable speed system uses an electronically controlled motor drive rather than V-belts. This changes the service landscape:

  • No V-belt to replace — the drive system is electronic
  • Control board — if the speed control behaves erratically or fails, the control board is the part to order; service through Powermatic
  • Motor brushes — depending on the motor type, brush replacement may be a scheduled maintenance item; check the 2800 manual for your specific configuration

Chuck and Arbor

The MT3 spindle takes standard MT3 tooling:

Quill Return Spring

The quill return spring is a torsion spring in the quill assembly. On the 2800, this is a Powermatic-specific part — order through their parts portal using the part number from the 2800 parts diagram.

Table and Rack Mechanism

The rack-and-pinion table height system on the 2800 is smooth and precise. If play develops:

  1. Check the rack-retaining hardware first — loose fasteners are more common than worn rack teeth
  2. Clean and lubricate the rack before assuming wear
  3. If the rack is actually worn, Powermatic can supply the replacement

Built-In Light

The 2800’s integrated LED work light is a Powermatic assembly. If it fails, order the replacement from Powermatic. A supplemental gooseneck LED on the column adds side-angle lighting that eliminates any remaining shadows from the spindle housing.
