What to Check Before Buying a Used Powermatic 1200

  1. Spindle runout — install a precision rod and check with a dial indicator. Under 0.003” is excellent. Runout above 0.010” indicates bearing wear.
  2. Quill condition — quill should move smoothly with no side play, and return crisply under spring pressure.
  3. Table clamp — should hold the table firmly at any height. A loose table clamp is a safety issue.
  4. Motor condition — listen for bearing noise, check starting capacitor condition.
  5. Belt and pulleys — check for belt wear and pulley alignment.

Chuck and Tooling

The MT3 spindle taper on the 1200 is the same interface as current Powermatic machines. An MT3 chuck arbor with a JT33 chuck is the correct replacement if the factory chuck is worn. Keep a dedicated chuck key at the machine.


Belt and Drive

A link belt is an excellent upgrade on any drill press, including the 1200 — it reduces vibration and makes tension adjustment easier.

Is a Powermatic 1200 Worth the Investment?
