Mechanical variable speed, VFD conversions, digital RPM readouts, and pulley setup guides.
The **Nova Voyager DVR 18 variable speed drill press (SKU 58000)** is not a drill press you buy because it was the next step up on a shelf. It's a deliberate purchase: a direct-drive, belt-free machine with electronic speed control from 50 RPM all...
Bauer is Harbor Freight's higher-tier power tool line, and the Bauer 12-inch variable-speed drill press with laser alignment is the brand's answer to the feature-rich benchtop machines that home woodworkers want: a 12-inch swing, a speed dial inst...
The Rockwell name sits at an interesting crossroads in tool history. Rockwell Manufacturing owned Delta for decades and built serious stationary machinery, and Rockwell also produced portable drills, including a 3/8-inch variable-speed model that ...
The WEN 4214 is the machine that made a lot of woodworkers stop moving belts. It is a 12-inch variable-speed benchtop drill press with a digital readout, and it has become a default recommendation for good reason. But a smart buy still comes from ...
I have a soft spot for tools that stop me from walking across the shop. The Baileigh DP-1400VS variable-speed drill press is one of them, because it puts a vise, a coolant nozzle, and a speed dial all within arm's reach of the feed handle. Whether...
The Powermatic 1150 is a vintage floor-standing variable-speed drill press from Powermatic's American manufacturing era — a machine that stopped production decades ago but remains highly regarded on the used market for its build quality and genuin...
Variable speed is the feature that changes how a drill press feels to use. Instead of stopping to move a belt between pulleys every time you switch from a large bit to a small one, you turn a dial and the machine changes RPM while it runs. WEN has...
You line up a pencil mark on a maple blank, pull the handle, and watch the bit for that first second. On a cheap machine it wanders a hair before it bites, and the hole ends up a touch off. That first second is the whole question with a budget ben...
Changing speed on most drill presses means stopping, opening a cover, and moving a belt across pulley steps, a small chore that gets old fast when a job needs frequent changes. The VFD drill press does away with it, letting you dial the spindle sp...
Most home shops do not have room for a floor-standing drill press, and most home shops do not need one. What they need is a machine that sits on the bench, does not eat the whole corner, and still lets you match the speed to the job. That is the v...
A new drill press is a big addition to any shop. It takes up space, it demands its own circuit, and once it is bolted down, you are committed. The RIKON 30-212VS is a 12-inch variable-speed benchtop model that promises to replace the belt-shifting...
The first time you watch a twist bit skate across a piece of steel plate and leave a bright silver scar, you learn the lesson that no drill press marketing page teaches: the machine is only as good as the speed it can hold. A metal variable-speed ...
You slide a piece of half-inch plate under the spindle, dial the speed down with a knob, and lean into the feed handle. The bit bites clean, no belt to move, no squinting at a chart taped to the head. That is the promise behind the Baileigh DP-120...
Move the belt on an ordinary drill press and you get maybe five fixed speeds, chosen by opening the cover and wrestling a belt onto different pulleys. A variable-speed machine skips all that: you turn a dial while the motor runs and the spindle sm...
The first time you burn the tip off a bit drilling steel, or scorch a clean edge boring a big hole in oak, you learn the same lesson every machinist and woodworker eventually learns: speed matters, and one speed does not fit every job. A variable-...
Anyone who has stopped a job to open the head of a drill press, loosen the motor, and shift a belt between pulleys just to change speed knows why variable speed is so appealing. Being able to dial the right RPM for a big Forstner bit, then a small...
People shopping for a variable-speed drill press often fixate on the motor, assuming that a special motor is what makes the speed adjust. Sometimes that is true, and sometimes the motor is completely ordinary and a mechanical system does the work....
Moving a belt across stepped pulleys to change speed is one of those chores that feels fine the first time and tedious the hundredth. Drill a hole in pine, then a big hole in steel, then back to pine, and you are opening the pulley cover twice per...
