Drill Press Vise Bolts: Fit, Capacity, and Setup Explained

Nothing is more frustrating than ordering a drill press vise, bolting it to your table, and watching it shift the moment you start drilling. Most of the time, the vise itself is fine. The problem is the mounting hardware - the T-bolts, studs, or hold-down clamps that connect the vise to the table.

This guide covers exactly how to buy the right drill press vise bolts, how to measure your table slot, and what to do when the holes in your vise do not line up with the slots in your table.


Why Drill Press Vise Mounting Fails

A 4-inch drill press vise typically has two through-holes in the base, spaced to match a specific bolt pattern. Those holes need to align with the T-slots in your drill press table, and you need hardware that fits both.

The two most common failure modes:

  1. Wrong bolt size - You buy 3/8-inch T-bolts, but your table slots only accept 5/16-inch hardware. The bolts do not fit, or rattle around with no clamping purchase.

  2. Wrong bolt spacing - The holes in your vise base are spaced 3.5 inches apart, but your table slots are 4 inches apart. The hardware fits the slots fine, but it cannot reach both vise holes at the same time.

Getting this right before you order saves you a return trip.


How to Measure Your Table Slot

Grab a pair of calipers. You need two measurements:

Slot width (the opening): This is the narrower dimension at the top of the T-slot. Most drill press tables use either a 5/16-inch or 3/8-inch slot opening.

Slot depth and base width: The T-nut or T-bolt head must fit into the wider bottom section of the slot.

A standard drill press T-slot accepts:

  • 5/16”-18 T-bolts - Most common on benchtop and mid-size drill presses (12” to 15” swing)
  • 3/8”-16 T-bolts - More common on floor-standing machines and heavier industrial tables

When in doubt, measure with calipers. Do not guess. A 5/16-inch shank will rattle in a 3/8-inch slot and never clamp solidly.


T-Bolt vs. Carriage Bolt vs. Stud Bolt

T-Bolt: A bolt with a flat, rectangular head designed to slide into a T-slot from the end. You drop it in, rotate it 90 degrees, and it locks into the slot. Used with a clamping knob or hex nut on top. This is the right hardware for any drill press with standard T-slots.

Carriage Bolt: Round domed head, square shoulder. NOT designed for T-slots. Carriage bolts are used in through-holes with a standard nut underneath.

Stud Bolt: A fully threaded rod used with two nuts. Common in machinist setups and step-block clamping kits. You thread one end into a T-nut that sits in the slot, and tighten the clamp down from the top with a nut and washer.

What to Do When Your Vise Holes Do Not Match Your Table Slots

This is a common problem. You have a 4-inch drill press vise with mounting holes spaced 3.5 inches apart, and your table slots are 4.5 inches apart.

Three solutions:

  1. Use hold-down clamps instead of through-bolts. Skip the vise’s mounting holes entirely. Use two DCT or POWERTEC cam clamp sets to capture the vise from outside the jaws.

  2. Make a vise sub-plate. Cut a 1/2-inch thick aluminum or MDF plate to fit your drill press table. Drill new mounting holes in the sub-plate to match your vise’s hole spacing. Then use T-bolts through the sub-plate into the table slots.

  3. Use a step block and stud kit. A step block and stud clamping kit uses threaded rods that drop into T-slots. The step blocks bear down on the vise base from above. You can position the studs anywhere in the slot regardless of where the vise holes fall.


Safety Reminders

Before you drill anything:

  • The workpiece must be clamped down. Never hold a workpiece freehand when the spindle is running.
  • Keep your hands clear of the point of operation and away from the rotating chuck.
  • Swarf and hot chips from metal work will eject in the direction of rotation.
  • Eye protection is non-negotiable.

FAQ

What size T-bolts do most drill press tables use? The most common size on benchtop drill presses is 5/16”-18. Larger floor-standing presses often use 3/8”-16. Measure your table slot before buying.

Can I use carriage bolts instead of T-bolts? Only if your drill press table has round holes rather than T-slots. Carriage bolts will not lock into a T-slot and can rotate under load.

My vise has two mounting holes but my table only has one slot. What now? Use a hold-down clamp for one side of the vise instead of a through-bolt. One T-bolt through a vise hole and one hold-down clamp on the opposite side is a perfectly secure setup for most drill press work.

How tight should the T-bolts be? Firm hand-tight plus a quarter turn with a wrench. You do not need massive torque, and overtightening can strip the T-slot or crack a cast base.
