The bit spins in one place, there is no whirling blade, and the motion is slow and deliberate. Then someone hand-holds a piece of steel, the bit grabs, and the workpiece becomes a spinning propeller. Drill press injuries are almost never about the machine failing. They are about setup and habits, which is good news, because those are things you control completely.

Drill press safety is the set of habits and guards that keep you clear of three hazards: the rotating bit at the point of operation, the workpiece if it catches and spins, and the hot chips (swarf) the bit throws.
