You reach for the feed lever, one arm spins loose in your palm, and the quill barely moves.   • Spins on the shaft: The set screw is stripped, missing, or riding on a rounded flat. Look for a shiny worn flat on the shaft where the screw should bite.
  • Wobbles or rocks: The hub bore is worn oval, or the hub casting is cracked. That is a real crank replacement.

If the quill will not move even with a solid lever, the crank is not your problem. That points at a seized quill, a broken return spring, or a bound spindle, which is a separate repair.

Measure the bore before you buy anything

This is the step people skip, and it is why returns pile up. The crank has to match two numbers: the shaft diameter and the flat or pin that keeps it from spinning.

Pull the old crank and measure the shaft with calipers. Bench presses in the 12 inch to 17 inch class very often run a 22mm hub bore, while smaller table-raising cranks tend to run closer to 14mm. Do not assume. A caliper reading takes ten seconds and settles the question for good.

Know which one broke before you shop, or you will end up with a table crank where a feed handle should be.

Get your model and serial number first

The parts lists and diagrams printed in the owner’s manual are for reference only; the site is the source for what is actually stocked. While the head is open, check the quill and chuck

Since the head is already exposed, look at the parts near the feed mechanism. If the chuck also needs to come off, most of these presses press a keyed or keyless chuck onto a Jacobs taper arbor, and that arbor sits in an MT2 Morse taper in the quill.

Open the chuck jaws all the way and look through the spindle access window (the slot in the quill). You can usually drive the arbor out with a taper drift pushed through that slot. To pull just the chuck off its arbor, seat two wedges or a chuck-removal tool against the chuck shoulder, rest the chuck on a wood block, and tap with a non-marring mallet. Never strike the chuck body with a steel hammer. A keyed chuck and a keyless chuck come off the same way, because the taper does the holding, not threads.

Quick wins while the guard is open

Check the belt on the step pulleys so your next speed change goes smoothly, confirm the table tilt lock holds and the pointer reads zero, and make sure the depth stop and drill guide move freely. Small stuff, but it costs you nothing while everything is already apart.

Installing the new crank

  1. Slide the hub onto the shaft and line the set screw up with the flat. Snug, not gorilla tight.
  2. Thread the arms in with a drop of medium threadlocker so they stop backing out.
  3. Run the quill through its full stroke by hand and confirm the return spring brings it back before you drill anything.

The verdict

Buy the crank only after you have measured, never before. A feed handle crank is one of the simplest fixes on the whole machine, but the wrong bore turns a ten-minute job into a return label and a second wait. Match the part, and you are back to drilling the same afternoon.
